Howe Leads Again

ORLANDO, Fla. - On Saturday, freshman Mackenzie Howe led the Kennesaw State women's cross country team to a seventh place finish at the 2007 Disney World Cross Country Classic. The race held at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex was plagued by rain and muddy conditions as over five hundred runners took part in the competition. The Owls (88-17) looked strong as they ran through mud and around sharp turns in what was their most exciting race of the season. With 49 teams running on the course the women came together to score 207 points for a seventh place finish. The University of Tampa won the 5k event with 91 points, Milligan College placed second with 116 points and South Dakota State came in a close third with 117 points. Howe led Kennesaw State in scoring as she made an incredible fourth place finish with a time of 18:06.45. Junior Erin Sutton finished the race with a time of 18:41.67 for 16th place, she was followed by Kristen Gibson (19:35.42), Caitlin German (19:43.88) and Britany Reilly (19:58.64) who completed the scoring for the team. This was the second straight meet that Howe was the leading runner for Kennesaw State. The freshman was named Atlantic Sun Runner of Week for her amazing 17:45 time last weekend at the Tiger Invitational. She is the first freshman to win the award since 2004. "This is real cross country," said head coach Stan Sims. "Running in the mud and giving it your best is what this sport is about. Our women came out here today and ran their hearts out. I'm proud of every one of them. The Owls will be back in action next Saturday as they travel to Alabama to participate in the JSU Foothills Invitational. 2007 Disney World Cross Country Classic Individual Results |
