Owls Prepare for USC Upstate
Oct. 16, 2008
KENNESAW, Ga.--The Kennesaw State volleyball team will play it's second Atlantic Sun Conference match of the week when it takes on the Spartans of USC Upstate this Friday night at 7:00 p.m. at the KSU Convocation Center. The two teams have met once already this season with the Spartans defeating the Owls 3-0 in Spartanburg, S.C. But over the last three matches, the Owls have been a rejuvenated team. Last Friday, the Owls pushed Belmont to five sets before falling 3-2. The next day, the Owls took the first set from first-place Lipscomb and nearly took two additional sets before falling 3-1. On Tuesday night at the Convocation Center, the Owls pushed Mercer into a fourth set before losing that deciding set 29-27. Redshirt sophomore Sabrita Gulley has helped to lead the charge for the Owls (2-17, 1-10 A-Sun). Gulley has recorded 41 kills over the last three matches, averaging 3.15 kills over 13 sets. Junior Chelsey Denesha has double-doubles in her last two matches, tallying 11 kills and 15 digs against Lipscomb and 13 kills and 10 digs against Mercer. Junior Selina O'Leary is averaging 3.77 digs per set over the last three matches. O'Leary missed four matches with an injury but still leads the team in digs with 182. Maintaining a record-setting pace for digs in a season in KSU history, O'Leary needs 54 digs to match her school record of 241 digs in a year. Junior setter Ginny Frederick has the potential to cross the 1,000 assist total for her career this weekend. Frederick needs 54 assists to become the first Owl to reach that plateau. USC Upstate is led by Sandra Campbell's 188 kills, good for a 2.98 kills per set average. The Spartans (6-12, 3-7 A-Sun) are also led by Campbell's .300 attack percentage, which ranks fifth in the conference. Following Friday's match, the Owls will take on East Tennessee State on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. in their final A-Sun match of the week. In addition, the Owls will take part in their annual fundraiser for Breast Cancer Awareness during Saturday afternoon's contest. |
