Owls Prep for Big Weekend Tests
Oct. 9, 2008
KENNESAW, Ga.--The Kennesaw State volleyball team will have a pair of tough tests this weekend. The Owls will face Belmont this Friday night at 7:00 p.m., followed by a face-off with Lipscomb at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. Belmont enters the Convocation Center one match behind Lipscomb in the Atlantic Sun Conference standings, with Lipscomb in a first-place tie with Florida Gulf Coast. "This will be one of the most challenging weekends we will have all season," said KSU head coach Valerie Jones. "We will need to play at our very best in order to perform well against these two teams." The Owls (2-14, 1-7 A-Sun) have dropped their last five matches, including a pair last weekend at East Tennessee State and USC Upstate. Sabrita Gulley leads the Owls with 134 kills and a 2.53 kills per set average. Callie Churchwell leads KSU's front-row defense with 0.63 blocks per set, while Ginny Frederick's 4.52 assists per set average is best on the Owls team. The Bruins (12-5, 6-2) have won four matches in a row, including a four-set win last weekend against FGCU. Cat Mundy's 3.88 kills per set paces the Belmont offense. Channing Salava runs the offense for Belmont, averaging 9.32 assists per set. Lipscomb (10-7, 7-1) will play Mercer on Friday before traveling to Kennesaw for Saturday's contest. The Bisons are three points short of having a perfect record in the A-Sun due to a 3-2 loss last weekend to FGCU. Lipscomb dropped the final set, 15-13, to narrowly lose the contest. Alex Kelly's 3.82 kills per set leads Lipscomb, while Stefine Pease has 666 assists on the year with a 9.79 assists per set average to lead the A-Sun. Due to a special event at the Convocation Center this Sunday, the East Parking Deck next to the Convocation Center will be closed. Fans attending this weekend's matches are advised to park in the East Parking Lot across Frey Road. KSU Athletics apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause. |
