Hayes, Davis Lead KSU to Sixth Place Finish

CLERMONT, Florida - April 15, 2006 - Patrina Hayes and Shatela Davis each won individual titles as they paced the Owls to a sixth place finish on the last day of competition at the 2006 Atlantic Sun Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday afternoon.

Jacksonville won the conference title with 145 points, followed by Gardner-Webb (100), Florida Atlantic (84.50), Campbell (62.50) and North Florida (62) rounding out the top five. The Owls' 57 points was the sixth highest total, ahead of East Tennessee State (49), Belmont (39) and Lipscomb (21).

A day after winning the 10,000-meter run with record time, Hayes made it a clean sweep in the distance events as she won the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:38.80. Her time was :26 faster than the next closest finisher, North Florida's Amanda Davey (17:54.16). KSU's Erin Sutton took home third after running a mark of 18:03.01.

Davis took home the title in the triple jump after recording the best leap of the season in the A-Sun. Her jump of 11.55m (37'-10.75") bettered the previous mark set by Jackosnville's Janita Ocana by a little less than one foot.

In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Kelly Bloom secured a fourth-place finish with a season-best time of 11:52.37, adding four points to the Owls' total score. Kim Garner (12:09.62) took seventh and her younger sister Barbara (13:03.52) finished ninth in the event.

Other performances of note include Alanna Hensley's fourth-place finish in the high jump (1.60m, 5'-3"), Magdelena Polko's fifth-place showing in the 1,500-meter run (4:50.49) and Lani Hammond's sixth-place time of 15.67 in the 100-meter hurdles.
