Owls Have a Strong Showing at Clemson

May 11, 2008

CLEMSON, S.C. - The Kennesaw State women's track & field team had a strong showing at the Purple and Orange Classic this weekend. Competing in their final meet before the Atlantic Sun Outdoor Conference Championship, the Owls had several outstanding performances, including a first place victory in the 5k and record setting marks in the high jump and the triple jump.

Distance specialist Britany Reilly was the sole representative for the Owls in the 5k race. The sophomore was running without the help of teammate Mackenzie Howe, who was suffering from an injury. Reilly remained undaunted as she quickly took the lead in the event and out paced her opponents for the victory. She crossed the finish line in 18:29.79, fifteen seconds ahead of her nearest competitor.

"This was a very good race for Britany," said distance coach Stan Sims. "She usually has a partner to race alongside, but with Mackenzie sitting out this weekend, Britany had the opportunity to run her own kind of race. She did very well and I expect her to do the same at conference next week."

On the field, the Owls were led by the outstanding performances of Jakia Ragland and Jill Arthur. Competing in the high jump, Ragland smashed her old personal record by four inches as she posted a height of 5-05.0ft to earn her second place in the competition. Arthur had an equally successful meet as she set a new KSU record in the triple jump with the distance of 39-08.50ft. The mark surpassed her old personal record by more than a foot and helped her gain second place in the event.

"This was just fantastic," said field coach Mike Goss. "Jakia looked like a butterfly when she cleared 5-05.0ft. I think that she could go even higher at conference. Jill did great too. She couldn't believe that she jumped that far. They both worked really hard at practice this week and it paid off."

Also on the field, the throwing team of Ana Ruiz and Jessica Lumpkin had an outstanding meet as they set several season high performances. Starting out the day, Lumpkin took fourth place in the hammer throw with a personal best distance of 136-11.0ft, while Ruiz finished in fifth with 112-06.0ft. Later Ruiz returned to compete in the Javelin where she finished in fifth place (107-0.0ft). She followed that up with a third place finish in the discus (117-02.0ft). Meanwhile, Lumpkin earned second place in the shot put with a toss of 33-01.75ft.

In mid-distance events, the Owls were led by Soibhan Wolcott in the 800m dash. The sophomore took fourth place with a time of 2:18.98, while teammates Caitlin German (2:28.57) finished in seventh and Lindsay Whalen earned tenth place (3:02.70). Also on the track Katie Charles took fourth place in the 3k steeplechase as she crossed the finish line in 13:37.72.

In short distance events, Shantela Davis came in sixth place in the 400m dash with a time of 1:01.08, while teammate Sandi Brown came in eighth (1:01.89). The pair later returned to the track to participate in the 4x100 relay alongside Lakeshia Stinson and Arthur. Their smooth transitions and improved split times helped them to set a new KSU record of 48.18 and earn sixth place overall.

"The ladies did a great job this weekend," said sprint coach Devin West. "This team has a lot of chemistry and they're very good at communicating with each in practice."

The Owls will complete their season next week as they return to Clemson's Rock Norman Track Complex to participate in the A-Sun Outdoor Conference Championship.
