KSU Cheer Team Face Tough Competition

Aug. 13, 2007

KENNESAW, Ga. - Head coach Felecia Mulkey and the Owls have released their competition and appearance schedule for the 2007-08 season.

Three major competitions highlight the campaign this season as Kennesaw State, who returns three All-Americans and five seniors, vies for its first-ever Division I national championship.

In just its third year as a Division I program, Kennesaw State will defend a title as they head back to Las Vegas to compete in the West Coast Championships. Last season the Owls took the event, which included some of the nations top squads.

"We had a very strong showing last year in Vegas and we would love to repeat as West Coast champions," said Mulkey on her squad's bid for back-to-back titles. "It is a strong event with San Diego State and other top teams, so hopefully we can have another solid competition."

Also on the slate for this season is the East Coast Championships, which will again be in front of the Owls hometown fans at the World Congress Center in Atlanta.

"We really want to perform well in front of our home crowd," commented Mulkey on the Owls second trip to the WCC. "There are teams from all over the region including Maryland, UGA, NC State and UNC-Chapel Hill so the field is once again very strong, but we are focused on this because it prepares us for nationals."

Finally, the Owls will head back to Daytona Beach, Fla. for the NCA Cheer and Dance Championships. Last season the Owls finished in third place behind Maryland and Louisville.

"We feel like we have a great deal of room for improvement to show from last season at nationals," added Mulkey. "We had a strong, solid performance, but we do not feel like we represented our program as well as we should have. This year, as in every competition, we are going to be focused on a top flight routine and hopefully take back a national title."

In addition, the Owls will hold three competitions on their home floor this season. Kennesaw State will host the Spirit of the South Regional in mid-December, the FCC Open Championships in late February and the Spirit of the South March Madness.

To begin the season, the Owls head to Myrtle Beach, S.C. in late August for the NCA College Summer Camp.
