Through The Mud
Oct. 8, 2007
ORLANDO, Fla. - On Saturday, the Kennesaw State men's cross country team was led to a third place finish by sophomore Peikko Solla at the 2007 Disney World Cross Country Classic. Over five hundred runners were covered in mud as several inches of rain turned Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex into a swamp. The Owls (82-11) ran their toughest race of the season against a field of 45 teams from all over the country. Kennesaw State was within striking distance of victory as they finished in third place with 142 points. South Dakota State won the meet with 108 points and Hofstra finished in second place with 115 points. Solla led the Owls in scoring as he completed the race with a time of 25:44.22 for ninth place. Juniors Michael Johnson (26:20.59) and Maxwell Ndungu (26:37.80) quickly followed as the pair turned in their best performances of the season. Freshmen Matteo DiCecco (26:47.82) and Piotr Witczak (26:54.27) then crossed the finish line to complete the scoring for the Owls. The numerous twists and turns on the 8k course made many of the runners lose their footing and fall into the mud. By the conclusion of the race most of the runners were covered in dirt and several had lost their shoes. "Cross Country is one of the toughest sports out there," said head coach Stan Sims. "Our men proved that today. I'm glad to see Peikko out there leading the team but I'm really proud of Michael and Maxwell. The both of them attacked this course and they really came through for the team. They loved having the chance to get dirty." The Owls will be back in action next Saturday as they travel to Alabama to participate in the JSU Foothills Invitational. 2007 Disney World Cross Country Classic Individual Results |
