Trip(l)ed Up...Smith's Triple-Double KO's Owls

JOHNSON CITY, Tennessee - January 25, 2006 -East Tennessee State shot 58 percent from the field and point guard Tim Smith recorded a triple-double as the Buccaneers downed Kennesaw State, 110-74, on Wednesday night at the Memorial Center.

Smith finished the game with 21-points on 8-of-17 shooting from the floor in 37 minutes of play. His ten assists and ten rebounds paced the Bucs as he recorded the first triple-double in East Tennessee State basketball history.

The Owls (11-9. 9-2 Atlantic Sun Conference) fought hard and stayed close in the early going, trailing, 21-20, with just over 12 minutes left in the first half. However, a 31-14 run by ETSU (11-7, 8-3) resulted in an 18-point Kennesaw State deficit as the teams headed to halftime.

In a fierce game that saw six technical fouls and two ejections, KSU could not muster enough momentum to cut into the Bucs second-half lead. Things got heated up in the half as the Owls Ronell Wooten and ETSU's Ben Rhoda were ejected after double technical fouls were assessed.

Golden Ingle led Kennesaw State, who remains in first-place with a half-game lead, with 24 points. The junior guard finished the game shooting 6-of-13 from the floor and was 9-of-10 from the free throw stripe. Wooten scored 15 and Brent Ragsdale added ten points as the Owls surrendered their most points since the 1995-96 season.

The Buccaneers out rebounded the Owls, 45-25 (18-8 on the offensive boards), and the ETSU bench held a 51-16 advantage over KSU.

Courtney Pigram scored 21 points, Dillion Sneed tossed in 17 points and Andrew Reed chipped in 16 points for ETSU who won for the tenth time in 11 games. Andre Morgan and Gaby Cruz scored seven points apiece for Kennesaw State who dropped their first conference road game of the season.

The Owls will return to the court on Saturday when they host the Mercer Bears for a 7:00 p.m. game at the KSU Convocation Center.
